The discovery of gold in Stony Creek brought many fossickers in 1887. Around this time, guest houses were being built to house the many tourists, botanists and naturalists who were discovering the beauty of the area. A network of roads from the town leads to other scenic drives and a wealth of walking trails.

Honeymooners once flocked to the Grampians in the early 1900s. Halls Gap was scattered with guesthouses. One such guesthouse today is the Mountain Grand. Purchase your copy of ‘Victoria’s Wonderland’ (published in March 2006) available at local retail outlets or from the Halls Gap Visitor Information Centre for a detailed historic reference on the Grampians and Halls Gap.

Experience Shakespeare in the Grampians, held several times a year at Heatherlie Quarry, includes favourites Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Romeo and Juliet. The Halls Gap Film Festival provides an interesting mix of art house, world and traditional movies in November.
